Wabanaki Beadwork - Whitefield, New Hampshire
Rhonda Besaw is coming to the Lupine Market with her traditional and contemporary beadwork - purses and earrings.. She'll also be demonstrating this Abenaki Indian craft that has been handed down over the years. Click here to learn more about the demonstrations.
She is one of the small number of beadworkers who specializes in traditional Wabanaki style beadwork and is known for herWabanaki style beaded purses. In the 1800's and early 1900's, the Wabanaki tribes of New England and Eastern Canada and the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) of New York State and Canada, sold beaded purses to tourists. Many young Native women during this time, including one of Rhonda's Native ancestors, were schooled by nuns in Quebec, and encouraged to do and sell such handiwork. Although the selling of these purses was a matter of economic survival for these Native peoples, they still incorporated traditional design motifs and sacred symbols in their beadwork. Stop by to watch her demonstrate this historic craft.
